DHTML and CSS work well together, and most sites are made from HTML/DHTML. You can't build a site just using CSS, and XML has limitations (somewhat). All are ways to make a web page and/or to display information. All can be done from your computer without Internet access so I think that they're all really reliable.

DHTML is a joke, an old concept!

Javascript is used to accomplish much of the dhtml idea.

CSS is how we stylize the webpages, they used to use tags, and other horrible non-standard tags.

XML is the simple structure for defining web pages, with styling and javascripting without the need for all the legacy html definitions. Coupled with XSL it can do anything ol' html could, while separating the content from the format.

AJAX is the modern technology that joins Javascript with Asynchronous programming with XML. It is pretty much the state of the art of WWW design.
