I am a high school saxophone player who has been doing improv for a few years now, but I feel like I am no longer improving my improv. Other than practicing chords and chord patterns, which I already do, what are some options? (I listen to some jazz music and have transcribed a couple solos.)

Practice with musicians. Have jam sessions. Have fun. That is the main thing. Have fun. Music can be an outlet of your emotions. I personally cannot improvise. I don't have the knowledge or imagination to pull it off. I do really love playing with others though. I find that playing with others improves my ability and attitude.

You will go through peaks and valleys, but don't get discouraged. I recommend exploring new types of music when you feel you're in a bit of a rut. Jam along with it. You don't need to learn it note for note or anything, but it wouldn't hurt, either. the more musical styles you can pull from, the more well-rounded you will be. The internet is great for discovering new music. Check out stuff from all over the world. You never know what you might incorporate into your playing without even realizing it. Play with several different types of musicians, if possible (not neccessarily all at once, though!).

lol i was gonna say practise chords more but you already do that. hmm. its good to practise with other people and have a look at their style. watching live music is better than just listening to music because they play their music slightly different each time
