Right off hand,I would vote for Johnny Depp-an amazing array of characters and can do comedy as well as drama equally well. Another would be Russell Crowe but I can only recall primarily dramatic roles as does them astonishingly well though.

Agree with you on Johnny Depp.

But I also must say Hugh Jackman. He's an actor that can play a convincing version of Wolverine and also in romances (like Kate and Leopold. I like that movie). Not only that, but he was in a broadway musical. Lots of variety there.

Also must point out Kate Beckinsale and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Kate did an excellent job both as a death dealer in Underworld and a lover of Leo Dicaprio in the Aviator. Catherine, of course, did an unforgettable performance in Chicago as a singer/murderess and a good job as a spy with an attitude in the Legend of Zorro.

For me, it's Val Kilmer. I've seen him in several movies and I swear that he, as an actor, disappears into his character. I have watched movies where I forget that it's him doing the lead role.
Sure Johnny Depp is good but I haven't seen him disappear like I've seen Val Kilmer do. Same with John Cusak. Both men are great actors but neither has yet to make me forget it's them doing their roles.

Tom Hanks would be my vote. That man can make any movie interesting. He's always been one of my favorites. From being a stranded castaway with only a handful of lines in the whole movie (and still being nominated for awards), to light romantic comedy (such as You've Got Mail), to offbeat roles such as Detective Handratty in Catch Me if You Can...he seems to be able to do it all. Love it!

I agree with you. I think Johnny Depp is the most versatile actor of our time. He is in so may very different roles (You should've seen the look on my face when I found out that "That Pirate Guy" was playing Willy Wonka). He is just amazing. I love every movie I see him in.

I have to agree with Trip S. It's gotta be Christian Bale. He is a total chameleon. Not only does he change his looks -- one movie he's a all skin and bones and the next he's a buff Batman, but he never uses the same accent twice either. He's from Wales, but he's done German accents, Italian accents, various British ones and, of course, American. My friends thought he was American, his accent was so good in American Psycho.

He can be innocent (like in Little Women), and scare the crap out of you crazy (American Psycho). He can even sing and dance (Swing Kids and Newsies). I just think he's great.

Joaquin Phoenix
Narcissistic and cowardly emperor in Gladiator
Demented and evil soldier and half brother in House of Spirits
Quiet yet quirky "hero" in The Village
Tormented yet loving uncle, brother and friend in Signs
Country music legend in Walk The Line
Average guy turned hero in Ladder 49

He is definitely versatile!

Christian Bale, From All the little animals, to American Psycho and on to Batman, he is amazing- If you haven't seen the mechanic, you should. He dropped to like a 130 pounds for that role. Now that's dedication.

A lot of good choices so far, but I have to go with Sean Penn. I think he is presently the best actor and very versitile.

Just look at all the roles he has played:
