Fish DO drink water and some drink continuously.Since salt is detrimental to kidney function, salt water fish have either dysfunctional or missing kidneys to prevent water loss. So, if some fish drink continuously, that's where the saying "drinks like a fish" comes from.Glad to enlighten you, take care.

What a clever question! The answer is that fish do drink water -- all animals (including ourselves) need water to survive. They also extract oxygen from water in order to breathe. But what about fish that swim in the ocean? Do they drink salt water? Yes, but saltwater fish excrete a lot of salt with the help of their gills. That's why most fish taste surprisingly unsalty -- that is, except for sharks.

That’s true, no fish drinks water. Even mammals like dolphins get most of the water they need from their food, so that if there is a lack of food, they tend to die of dehydration before they die of hunger. I assume the term, drinking like a fish comes from a time before yahoo answer, when not everyone knew this fact. It is probably a reference to the fact that fish totally immerse themselves in the stuff 24/7, and even breath it. Imagine immersing yourself in hooch! As you left this message at approximately 4am, perhaps you know?

Basically cos fish are surrounded by lots of water - & if you drink lots of water, it effectively means you've drunk enough water to fill a fish tank. (Yeah, I know - loadsa rubbish).
