What is the purpose of boarding school? Why is it an honour to be sent away from your parents before college?

It can be considered an honor because your parents are purposely sending you to a good school instead of settling for the public/private schools that are in the neighborhood.

Usually they are very difficult prep schools. Maybe even really hard to get into which might make it a honor.
