My disk space has steadily dropped by 400 MB over the last few months and I couldn't figure out why. I always delete my internet files, cookies etc. in explorer. So I went to my c drive, right-clicked on all the files, clicked properties and recorded the used disk space from each folder. Today my total disk space dropped by 10 MB. I checked each folder's properties and found that "documents and settings" has changed by this amount. In this, the only folder that uses up a lot of space is "local settings" which is using 460 MB, and the only folder in this using up a lot of space is "temporary internet files" with 5311 files and 9 folders for 453 MB. but when i double-click it, it's empty. However, if i click on "folders" I see that under temp internet files, theres another folder called "contents" and in it are 8 other folders with tons of files from websites i visited months ago. is this the cause of my drop in space? Why didn't these files get deleted? is it safe to delete them all?

i already deleted all the temporary internet files, cookies in the explorer options. and when i click on the folder it's empty.
but when i click on "folders" at the top, i see that inside, there's a folder called "Conten.IE5" which has 7 other folders in it like "0HWC4..." and each of these folders have a bunch of files from what i think are websites. but there are also other things like "desktop.ini" which are apparently system files. why don't these get deleted?

Yes it is safe, actually if you use the Disk Cleaner (or many other programs that do the same thing) in Windows it will erase the Temp files in this directory. The easiest way to do so is to open your Windows Explorer, when you see Drive C right click on it, then click on "Disk Cleanup". Once Windows has determined which files it can erase you will see a window that tells you what it will delete, make sure that you check the box for temporary files, recycle bin etc. That should do it. Do it regularly. This is free, it comes with your OS (all Windows OS). EasyCleaner by Toni Arts is great as suggested above and it used to be free (I used it with Windows 98 years ago but I think you have to pay for it now, I may be mistaken, check it out, it doesn't hurt to have it if it is free. I think they now want you to be a member for $19.95 a year.

To additional info: Some files will not be deleted because they are not subject to the "search" because of their extension and could be used by other applications. If it has become that critical for you to gain disk space I recommend buying an external or even internal additional hard disk.

Yes ,, you can delete anything in you temp internet files, and make sure you delete all the cookies that are there also, when you do you will see a much faster page loading on the internet, the easiest way is to go to start menu, then to programs, then to accessories, then to system tools and hit disk cleanup, and when it comes up check all box's and then hit ok, it will take a few minutes but it will be worth it, good luck and enjoy surfing after the clean up.

Yes, delete them as long as they are Temp files and/or cookies. However, the "master" (that's what I call it) DATA File can NOT be deleted.

These progs UPDATED and configured properly will free up a LOT of space for you! I use A-A as a backup to and after SS&D since it's not as powerful as SS&D.

Also, go to My Computer, click it to get to the different Drives. Rightclick Drive C>Properties and then click the Disk Cleanup button, check all boxes and follow directions. This should clear some space for you, too.

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

Go to internet explorer
Go to tools and then internet options
A Window will pop up
Click on delete files and another window will pop up
check the delete offline content box and click ok

You should delete the cookies too.
Your work is done.
