I own twenty auto repair shops, five auto body shops, two exotic bird stores, and one porno shop.
An automobile mechanic is some guy that likes to monkey with your car's mechanical and electrical systems, often screwing them up worse than when you brought him the car.
An autobody repairer makes your car's body look pretty after it has been structurally compromised from the collision you had because the automobile mechanic 'fixed' your brakes.

Automotive Body Repairers
These workers repair and replace front-end components, body components, doors, frame, and underbody components of motor vehicles. Even the most minor "fender-bender" accident can damage a car, and the salt used on our icy winter roads causes a good deal of rust--so there's no shortage of work. This group includes "metal repairers" who work in car assembly plants to repair damage on new car bodies. There's no place in a new-car showroom for scrapes and dents!
Automobile Mechanic
The work of automotive service technicians and mechanics has evolved from mechanical repair to a high technology job. As a result, these workers are now usually called “technicians” in automotive services and the term “mechanic” is falling into disuse. Today, integrated electronic systems and complex computers run vehicles and measure their performance while on the road. Technicians must have an increasingly broad base of knowledge about how vehicles’ complex components work and interact, as well as the ability to work with electronic diagnostic equipment and computer-based technical reference materials.

all of these answers from technicians (both body and mechanical) and not one mentioned the most important parts.....
body men fix the outside dents and dings rust and metal work then finish it off with hopefully a fantastic paint job to make it look good.
technicians fix the mechanical parts engine , trans , steering , brakes the important parts to make your car go steer and stop so u can show off your hopefully excellent paint job.
but the biggest difference is as a job the mechanic charges 75 to 200 dollars an hour while the body shop regulated by the insurance companies gets only 38.00 an hour for paint and 50 dollars an hour for frame straightening they get screwed.
