So many preach about the separation of church and state yet they support having an ambassador to a religious organization. Why?

vatican city is actually an independant country even though its part of italy, kinda like east and west berlin were 2 different countries for a while

It has nothing to do with the separation of church and state in this country. The Vatican is a sovereign nation with which we have formal relations. We're a democracy yet we have diplomatic relations with monarchy's. We don't have a state religion but we have relations to countries that do.
