Liberty. Absolute security is unattainable, but anything short of absolute liberty is a tragedy.

I agree with backinbow. If one has total security, but no rights and liberties, it wouldn't be a life worth living. If one has liberties but not reasonable security, the same problem would exist. There must be a balance. That is the problem our country is struggling with now - how to provide the security necessary to feel safe from the terrorists without people feeling like they're living in a police state. It takes a lot of finesse, and unfortunately, the Bush administration has come down too heavily on the security side.

One thing that would help is if it consulted with both political parties in Congress, rather than going it alone. At least then (theoretically) the public would have a voice in this important issue.

There is no absolute liberty. You are not free to speed, to lie about anyone that is not a famous person ( ie political lies all the time) You are not able to print your own money or steal.

You can own TNT or a atom bomb.

So there is always a limit on liberty. You can't drive a car without a license, you can't vote if you are not registered and so on.

It is just a matter of what liberty should be given up for security.

Nothinig can be completely secured either, so finding the right balance is the issue.

Both are important because Liberty supports Security and Security supports Liberty. They balance each other. WIthout Security, Liberty would be chaos. Without Liberty, Security would be like trapping you in a cage or something o.o

Wow, this is a TOUGH question!
Without security, there is no liberty, but without liberty, there is no point to having security.
Isn't this kind of a "the chicken or the egg" question?

One can't have true liberty without security.

Liberty. If you have libery, then you will be free to defend yourself, not depend on the government to secure you.

Both are equally important, and it is necessary to find a balance between the two.
