What could be the cause? I am 40 y.o.

sometimes this is normal for your age group, could be early menopause .

lucky you. you are in perimenopause. Your body is slowing it's estrogen level and eventually you will stop your period completely. there is nothing to worry about. This is all natural. I have gone through this myself. My doctor tells me I have 4 more years before menopause actually starts. Just relax and think of how wonderful it will be when you don't have period anymore.

It could be, just remember that the amount of blood that exits your body is different every period. I hope that I helped.

Less blood in the body. Your period is probably removing blood faster than your pancreas and long bones can produce it. If you don't stop having periods soon you could die.

COULD BE AN AGE THING. I DID JUST THE OPPOSITE. HAVE YOU ASKED YOUR DR. ABOUT THIS. OR IF YOUR ON THE PILL, THAT'LL DO IT ALSO.
