iam not talking about civil case .i am talking about where the punishment is jail or prison.

Lawyers a bit of a scam. Don't get me wrong my cousin is a lawyer. In John Stossel's Books "Myths Lies and downright stupidity" he talks about how this guy was giving cheap lawyer service to people and ended up getting sued or something (i don't remember, but Stossel's book is excellent). This happens alot because lawyers hate the competition.

In addition to all the other answers, not only did they pay a whole lot of money for their education (along with drs) but their education required many additional years of study. They also are required to become experts in the many new laws which are constantly being passed which requires paying for the seminars they must attend to keep up. Therefore, they expect to receive adequate compensation for their services.

Mostly to do with supply and demand & because the better a lawyer is the more they can charge because they will have a higher demand
