Have you ever been in that situation before? Sometimes we are not sure we need the help. Some one with a true mental illness has no clue, it is up to those around us to guide us in the right direction. Mental and emotional illnesses are serious and effect all of those in our lives and at times when it gets really hard to just be on this earth and take our next breath (some don't want to believe me) we don't know that it is time for intervention, because by that point we can't rationalize or truly even know right from wrong. I am saying we in this sense because at some point in all our lives we can have a break down or hard time dealing ....some people can handle them self's better then others and some completely lose it. I feel sorry for those people and would guide them and be there for them.

I am going to take this question one step farther now....why is it the depressed people go to regular doctors who give out anti-depressants like aspirin and don't tell the patients to see a shrink, and find out the real cause of what it is that's making them so depressed? But I DO know people like you discribe. Who knows. Maybe it's because they cannot think clearly and are thinking why bother going to a dr, nothing will help. Actually I DO know people who DID get help in the form of pills and they are no better off than before they started taking the pills? The pills didn't work .

I feel that they are wasting their life away. There are so many resources available to the mentally ill that if they don't get help it is their own fault....it is so sad! I am not trying to sound negative toward the mentally ill....my father tried to kill himself like 10 times when I was a child....I know all about mental illness...I am also bi polar...I just live a better life now that I am on the right medications and am in counceling....

It isn't any one else's business, unless you are in the mental health field. Even then, it still isn't your business unless that person chooses to become a "patient" seeking help. Depression isn't always a bad thing! It gives a person some time to themselves!!! Anger is good for the soul!!! I'm an only child who enjoys being a loner & being alone.

I'd have to know the person. Maybe they do not recognize - or cannot recognize - the problems. If you were in a coma, you wouldn't know you were in a coma so you couldn't wake yourself. Mental illness is no different...there are a bazillion sayings to illustrate this.
'can't see the forest for the trees'
Ever heard the Jesus thing about worrying about the splinter in the eye of someone else when you have a plank in your own?

You can make people go to a psychiatrist or any other professional for that matter, but you can't make them accept that help or benefit from it. People have to come to a realization on their own that they have a problem and ask for help before it does any good. It's the same basic concept as dealing with a druggie, alcoholic or someone addicted to sex or gambling. You have to want help before it does you any good.

Because they are angry and depressed. Many people feel embarrassed for feeling this way. They dont want to have to tell their life story to a stranger because they feel like they are being judged.

The same thing I think of the alcoholic who doesn't have the desire to quit or get help. Disgusted.

I've been married to one for 10 yrs. who has bi-polar disorder. They should have a special place in the mental institution for them.

They make everyone around them miserable. After awhile, they alienate the world, even their family members. How hard does their have to get before they seek help? They know they're not normal. They're too hard headed and blame everyone else for their misery.
