If the mutual fund is closed to new investors, there are sometimes ways around the closure. One way that I know of is to purchase a large amount of another fund in the same family that is not closed. The fund family sometimes has that exception. For example Artisan Funds stipulates that if you have $100,000 invested in other funds of theirs then you can also invest in a closed fund of theirs. You may also invest in a closed fund if you are already an investor in that fund. Also if you have a financial advisor that has other clients invested in the closed fund, that advisor can often also invest for you in that fund.

What do you mean by a "closed mutual fund"? If this is a close-end fund, you buy it just like a stock, through a broker. If this is a mutual fund closed to additional investments, you cannot buy it unless it re-opens and begins to admit additional investors again...

if the fund is closed to new investors you CAN buy but ONLY if you buy directly through the compnay that has the fund offering. It is rare that they will allow this but this is the only way you actually can buy funds from that company. You'll have to check with the fund company to see if you can but it directly through them.
