I'm sorry but I think you need to get another "favorite orange sweater". Is this the first time you have washed it?
I'm a male whose wife had to explain to me what those "pilly things" mean. She says it means the garment was made of cheap, poor quality material. I had two pair of supposedly good quality slacks do the same thing after being washed. My wife said there was no point in getting rid of the "pilly" things. It would take a lot of effort and then the garment would just do the same thing the next time you cleaned it.
She now checks the quality of material of a garment before I buy it.

You need to get one of those sweater shaver gadgets which are about $5-$10 and are sold at places like Bed Bath & Beyond and are meant just for this purpose. It is pretty boring as you are just taking this little gadget to your sweater and swirling it around as the little pills are snagged off. But, it makes somewhat of a difference.

buy a sweater shaver or use a razor blade. The sweater shaver works great. Big Lots or Kmart

try one of those doggie metal brushes. The ones that have the very small wires. It works!
Just brush the sweater gently and it will take off all the little pills!

I use a lava rock. The kind you use for your hands & feet. I keep one in the laundry. just lay the sweater out flat and very carefully run the rock in one direction. It will pick all the fuzz balls off.

You can always use a clothes scraper, but often times I just use a piece of really sticky tape and wrap it around my hand and it works really well for me. You might try it and see what happens.
