Sponges are a mass location for bacteria to grow- so that is likely why it smells. Pour a little bleach in a small bowl or bucket with some water and let the sponge soak for about 5-10 minutes and then rinse it out. This should realistically be done before its used each time, because so much bacteria grows in them. Usually if you use a sponge and don't clean it with bleach, you are just transferring bacteria onto your counters and dishes.

Run it through the dishwasher with the dishes. Always works for me. If you don't have a dishwasher, you could also through it in the washing machine with the whites as long as they're not delicate. Either way, the prolonged exposure to hot water can really get rid of the bacteria that make the sponge smell so bad.

If it is a synthetic material you can try putting it in the washing machine with a load to be bleached. Natural sponge you can try a non-clorine bleach. Dishwasher is good for synthetics. Still no luck? If expensive return to store, if not, just toss it away and remember next time to let it air-dry. Stinky sponges are no fun besides being unhealthy.

They say that kitchen sponges are one of the most bacteria filled items in our homes. I try to remember to throw mine in the dishwasher when I run it. You can also soak them in a weak solution of bleach and water. That should get rid of the smell.

get it wet and microwave it for a few minutes. This might help with the smell.. but it will also kill any bacteria living in the sponge.

One problem is that you have to remember to rinse it & wring it out well every time. Bleach works great! Just wet the spounge & put a little bleach on it & squeeze it with water throughly. Then rinse again with a little soap well. That will take care of the problem.
