I work at an office, in a cubicle. About 7 feet behind me sits a very large, kinkos-sized printer that has an internal fan constantly running inside of it. The fan is really loud and annoying, and I'm exposed to it like 10 hours each day. The printer can't really be shut off because people are constantly using it, and I'm afraid of speaking up about it because people will think I'm weird. I've tried ear-plugs, but they hurt my ears. Any comments, suggestions? THANKS.

Get your work, or even better if you are in one Union, H&S rep in to measure noise levels.

If they are above acceptable levels they will have to, at a minimum, move you somewhere else.

You should also get your hearing checked out, if nothing else this will give a baseline to measure any future problems against.

As for people thinking you are weird for speaking up, they probably think you're weird for keeping quiet.

If the printer has been there for a while then there are probably a few who have sat there and moved after complaining.

I suggest you first speak to the IT person incharge of the printer itself. Tell him / her about your problem and ask if it is possible to shift the printer without any problems. They will either just do it, or tell you the exact problem in shifting it - such as location of the power supply, length of the cables etc. Look for the solution - some other convenient power outlet. Since the problem isyours, you may be able to find the solution rather than a person who is not so interested.

If that does not work, then raise the level, and go to the management. You may even request them to relocate your cubicle, if relocating the printer is too much of a hassle.

Remember, any organisation worth its salt would like to make sure all its employees are comfortable at work to ensure productivity. So a genuine problem like this would be taken in the correct spirit, so do not hesitate.

i think you should speak up and asked to be moved. they can get someone else to sit there. someone that runs thier mouth 24 hours a day and will drown out the sound of the fan in the printer.

If you can't be moved or don't want to ask, play a soft radio or put music on from the computer. If that is not possible, get your own fan that will cloud the noise from the fan yet circulate some air.

Hope that helps.

Hahaha - well, depending on the severity of the vexation that this printer causes you, you can take one of several paths to solve the problem... a.) talk to your boss, b.) [perhaps] ask another cubicle-dweller if they would be willing to switch you desks, or c.) shoot the f u c k e r...and if this isn't an option and they refuse to relocate you or it, then sue them for a hefty solatium (mental damages) fee, kk?

You should talk to your boss and let him know about it. Say it is causing you headaches and making it hard for you to concentrate on work - ask if it is possible for you to be moved to a different location. I think any reasonable boss would have no problem with moving you.

ask to be moved...that the printer fan is interfering with your concentration at work. if the employer is mature enough, they will move you with no questions asked....
