Do you have to be a former player to be a coach? NO! All you need is experience and a desire to work with players and to help them improve. However, at the high school level, you will need a college education and SOME exposure to the game - which player to choose for the team and which to "cut"; what type of offense and defense to play and at what point in the game to use them; an ability to gain the respect of your players and how to hold on to it; and, above all, the humility to realize that it is the PLAYERS who ultimately win or lose games but it will be YOU who will bear the reponsibility.

best to be an assistant at a local high school. watch the practice drills, watch varsity compared to jv. go to different games to watch other teams warm up. see their drills. ask to watch or help at local middle school . that is where you get basic drills.
just depends what you plan on coaching( age wise).. also, boys try to be more one on one, while girls want to play team ball. girls will listen more then guys.

You know most of the job is just showing up. Check out some books from the library. Just don't let anyone see them.
