What would be the purpose for earning a phd? I am majoring in sociology, applying for grad school for a masters in family and consumer sciences then a phd?

That depends upon the PhD. I know of a few programs which are not accredited. They are cheap. They are real PhD's, but they are worthless on the job market. They say you know a lot about something no one else cares about or about a very specific aspect of religion. There are other programs which are bought without any knowledge or work required.
I think the main thing you would want is an accredited program. You could then teach and do research. You could also supervise other people's research and check their information. I don't know about the money aspect, but that is the main use of PhD's. The other use is for self-confidence. You might just get one for yourself. Be warned! Your education will define your job. A PhD. may over qualify you for many jobs. An employer will not negotiate a lower salary for you. An employer will just tell you that you are overqualified. You might get a job by choosing not to disclose all your education. I don't know how ethical that is, but if you need work...
