Unfortunately, yes. Apple won't allow any other player to use iTunes, and it won't allow the iPod to work with other music software. I know, it sucks, and it's probably the best reason (only reason?) not to get an iPod.

legally...yes, they are.

however...someone recently did some cracking that would allow other players to support itunes. since the whole issue is a massive grey area leaning more toward the "someone's getting sued" side.

yup, ipods only work with itunes and vice versa
