Many people have abused welfare and some of us have not. I have worked my entire life, and even at times made a very good amount of money. Became a single mom by circumstances too complicated to explain here; waited for this child for 15 yrs since my first child died of SIDS.
I never planned for things to turn out like this.
The most important thing in the world for my daughter is for us to spend as much time together as possible. I wish I could be a stay at home mom, but I work and go to school.
I have been paying taxes since I was 16 and at 39 I need some help. I am not lazy or stupid, but life happens. I have no family to depend on and believe me the government does not make getting assistance even close to easy. The hoops I have to jump through are ridiculous (because of all the fraud and screams from people who have never been in my shoes, or someone else's that needs a hand.
I suppose the anti welfare people would have preferred I give my daughter up for adoption because circumstances are not ideal and we need help. Well I matter too and you may as well have put a bullet in my brain than give my precious child to someone else.
She is an amazing happy healthy wonderful child and no child is more loved in the entire world. So we are poor and getting MINIMAL assistance. I am busting my butt to make a good life for her, forgive me if I need a little help.
PS there is a limit in place in my state.

Where do you live? BECAUSE my state has no welfare at all any more. They had went to the timetable like situation about 10 yrs ago and about 2 or 3 yrs ago, they even got rid of that.
The money that the government spent on welfare-the whole time they had welfare in the US, is less than a lot of the spending we do on a yearly basis to other countries.
I would rather my tax money be at work for the citizens of US than sent off to wherever.

When the welfare system was designed there was a timetable. I think you were only suppose to receive benefits for 6 months and yes we need to implement something before the funds are abolished and there will be no way to help the needed even temporarily. Equally important the requirements should include the fact that the recipient is a legal US citizen.

We should require welfare recipients to work for their checks at a fair wage. The US has raised a new class of 2ND, 3rd, and 4Th generation welfare family's, that are experts in manipulating the system to their favor. I was recently unemployed, and for the first time in my 41 years of life, applied for unemployment benefits. They were quick to send me food stamps, which I gladly excepted, as I held my head in shame at the ch ash register purchasing food for my family of 6 (4 boys). I never received any unemployment, although I filled both on line and over the phone. I provided copies of my resume, filled out all job application forms, and had verbal reassurance that the checks were coming. Every company I worked for has taken out money for unemployment compensation, and my wages would have maxed out the unemployment equivalent science I was 21 years old. Because I work for a living, I have not had the opportunity to train myself on the proper tecneak of draining the welfare system, while some experts have had time to learn for generations. We should insist they get themselves up every morning and go to work for their check. Maybe some could work at daycare facilities, that would alleviate the excuse of who will watch my children. I'm sure all city and counties have needs that this new labor force could handle. These new jobs, might also teach new trades to people that had none before.

There should be a limit to benefits, if you are able to work. There should be some type of job training so people could get off. I also think that there should be a limit of how many children you can have and still get benefits. These welfare mothers who make a career of having more children to get more money have to stop.

What are you talking about? Welfare is a joke the way I experience it. They want to know everything about you including what kind of toilet paper you use. What they give you does not amount to a hill of beans. It's not even worth getting on welfare unless that is your last resort. Timetable my a**.......

We should definitely establish a time limit. I have some family members that never seem to get off welfare. If it starts looking like they might get cut off, they just have another kid or move to another state with more lax guidelines. It should be a safety net, not a way of life.

For people that are healthy and totally capable of working Yes there should be a time table, people should not be allowed to "milk" the system. It must be nice to be able to draw a check every month while you do nothing but sit on the tails year after year. However, If you are truely disabled and need assistance than you should get it.

Its been done, one of the bills signed by Bill Clinton. It is called welfare to work. In Michigan I think it is 2 years per claim and 4 years lifetime. Hey it works for me. I think it should have been done way before that maybe during the Reagan years.

Yes give them a certain amount of time to find employment then gradually reduce the amount they receive based on the amount they make in wages based on how many people are in there family!
