Well, depending on who's door you'd be knocking at, some people wouldn't take to well of it... However, I think it would be hillarious... If Prince Harry was able to spook the royal family with that nazi uniform bearing the swastika, dressing as Hitler would be a real great "rising from the dead" hit... Provided you not stuck in a party with an "entourage" of "anal-political" people, who will insist on making an issue of it and telling them to get over it is something they'll do, only when you finaly dissassociate with them...LOL But that's their problem, not yours.
Go for it, and have fun!
Cheers!

I personally would think it was clever. People dress up as other, perfectly real and historical, horrific characters for Halloween. If a person were to dress as a serial killer, they would be accepted and applauded. If they were to pretend to be the dead victim, they might even draw some laughs. To the people involved, neither a serial killer nor his victim is funny, but the general public feels removed enough from the situation to turn them into pranks.
The issue with Hitler is that he has been demonized as someone so horrible, so unspeakable, that the very thought of him is sacrilegious. We picture all kinds of dead Jews, killed in all kinds of terrible ways, every time we see the swastika. We are sure that that is the pit of mankind.
He’s nothing new, though. All throughout history, people who are convinced that a certain group of people has caused every problem in the world, is irreparably evil, and is less than human, has gone to war, leading other people to kill the “evil ones”. The only difference is that Hitler gained his country’s trust first. He was so charismatic and brilliant that he was incredibly successful. He did wonderful things for Germany, he really did. But he was insane, as many geniuses are, and he went over the edge. He not only killed, he SYSTEMATICALLY killed. He trapped and tortured people. He did not only pursue the Jews. He killed Polish people, homosexuals, Roman Catholics, Protestants, Gypsies, the handicapped, the retarded, prisoners of war, Jehovah’s Witnesses, anti-Nazi clergy, trade unionists, and psychiatric patients.
I think that the reason Hitler is forbidden, is because he could have passed for a normal person. He could have led any group of people. He was brilliant, charismatic, and passionate. And he murdered millions of people on his quest to rid the world of imperfection. He was successful, and that scares people. They aren’t scared of people who kill once or twice and then get caught, but there is something terrifying about a man who convinced an entire country to kill at his side.
In summation, I would find the costume to be very clever, though I might dart my eyes a bit to see if there are any Jewish people nearby to be offended. However, as the general public is scared shitless of him, he might not be the best idea for a jest.

I think that since this is america you have the freedom to choose what you want to dress up as for halloween. But, I do believe you should think about how other people would feel if you were to dress up as Hitler. Think of the consequences before you make your decision. If you don't mind being classified as a Nazi, well then go for it. Just think of all the things that might result from you doing this.

Since many adults enjoy scaring the peawaddy out of children (eg werewolf costumes leaping at them when they ring the door bell) I find it quite appropriate to return the compliment. So, scaring, upsetting, ruining Halloween, or any other major upset to ADULTS is fair game. Just don't pick a Jewish nursing home or primarily Jewish setting to perform as Hitler. The point for me is to scare, intimidate, upset, and disgust adults. If you go out Halloween night, you must take in all the possibilities. There is no place for political correctness when trolling around on the hobgoblin' night!

Well I see your point. Still, I would rather go as the devil than Hitler. I guess the devil is more accepted in society and we can poke fun at but satirizing Hitler would piss a lot of people off. Just ask Prince Harry!

Not a good idea. I don't know if you saw or heard how much grief Prince Harry of England got for dressing up like that. The President of Iraq offended a lot of people recently when he suggested the Holocaust was made up. Granted, I am presuming you are not famous, but you would offend people just as much.
I am sure you have more creative things to dress up as for Halloween. It is supposed to be fun and not offensive.

Wouldnt bother me at all. Just so long as you dont really think you are Hitler and start acting like him all the time it sounds like a good halloween costume.

I saw a guy dressed as a klansman last year and he got things thrown at him. Some costumes are in bad taste whenever.

It's context-specific. If you're going to the Haloween party at your local synagog, I'd recomend against it.
