Because Yahoo's privacy policy allows for no privacy from governments.
I'm playing devil's advocate here but if information given by yahoo led to the arrest of terror suspects who were planning a raid of attacks would you praise Yahoo or attack them? obviously the situations are different and i agree that what yahoo did was sh*tty but is it ok to give out information for some and not for others? yahoo is a business not a political agenda.
EDIT: Here Nobody:

That's not exactly what they did.
They supplied information on the activities of the Internet, not give up specific individuals. Although that is semantics.
If they didn't they would get blocked.
To anyone that thinks that supplying personal information to governments is OK in light of 9/11. Remember that the Taliban in Afghanistan was also a government. So why not supply them with all the US information they ask for?
The Chinese government mindset is all bark and no bite. They like to be treated fairly, but will bully when they don't get their way. In matters of business Yahoo would have more success in politely pushing back. The Chinese would then either rant and rave if they thought Yahoo would back down, or ask for something else to save face. Giving in is just the beginning of a downward spiral. The more control they have the happier they are, but they know if they push too hard too soon, it will go underground. And that terrifies them, more than almost anything else in the world.
How long will this question stay, who cares, it's out now, and will always be somewhere.
