(from the Wikipedia article): "Harry Houdini died of peritonitis, secondary to a ruptured appendix. Eyewitnesses to an incident in Montreal gave rise to speculation that Houdini's death was caused by a McGill University student, J. Gordon Whitehead, who delivered multiple blows to Houdini's abdomen to test Houdini's claim that he was able to take any blow to the body above the waist without injury."

On the night of October 22, 1926 Houdini was performing in Montreal. At the Princess Theater when in his dressing room a young man walked in and asked if he could punch him in the stomach to see how strong his muscles were. Before Houdini could tighten his stomach the young man began to punch. Houdini did not know it but, his appendix burst. Before his final performance he went to the doctor and he said his appendix was bursting. Houdini refused to stop performing. So at his very last show he collapsed on the floor and was rushed to the hospital. A few days later one of the greatest magicians of all time died on October 31, 1926.

Houdini died from what is now believed to be a ruptured appendixs
His appendix ruptured from a blow to the stomach he recieved from an overzealous college student who had heard of the great illusionists ability to take any blow to the midsection. The goof hit Houdini when he was not braced and the rest is history.

He died from peritonitis and it was too many blows by Whitehead. My cousin has some of the strongest abdominal muscles known. You could punch him there all I want and he wouldn't even flinch. He said though continuous blows there as u get older would cause problems in Houdini case.
