I am hoping some experienced mothers can help me out on this question. I thought all crib bumper pads were 4 sided until I saw a 3 sided one tonight while searching the internet. Does anybody know the difference between the two?? Is a 3 sided bumper pad safe??

thanks!

3 sided bumper pads are usually used on cribs that have a front gate that slides or folds down. You will want to put something else over the gate so that the baby can't hurt themselves, but won't get in the way of the slide/fold operation.

The four sided has pads for all four sides of the crib. The 3 sided has pads for the sides and the bottom. You can then buy a head bumper that you like to customize your crib. We did our son's in a three sided bumber pad and got this cute Peter Rabbit Head bumper(a head bumper is large and cover the entire inside front of the crib, not just half-way up like a regular bumper) that just made his crib look awesome!

3 sided bumper pads are for cribs with drop sides, so that you can raise or lower the side to reach baby or secure baby easier (or you can leave it down depending on the height of the mattress and the age of the baby, since there should still be the side of teh crib to prevent baby from falling). Bumper pads are more or less a decorative thing, as they aren't particularly useful (except for as a climbing agent for kids old enough to try!).

it's probably for the cribs with the drop side so you can lower the side easily, although I use the 4 sided ones and my crib has a drop side and it works just fine.

I've also used bumpers in the crib since my son came home from the hospital, just make sure they are tight and secure.

3 sided is fine. But you should not use a bumper pad until the baby can roll/hold its head up his/herself. Crib death has been the result of using bumpers early on.

Well actually some doctors will tell you not to use them. I have for all three of my kids(11,9,3), with no problems. As long as there are bumper pads against the railing a 3 sided should be fine.

a 3 sided is just meening that the one wall of the crib has a slide down option for easy reaching in and out to pick up the baby. so the pad is meent for a crip with that option.a 4 sided goes the whole way around.also with the 3 sided if you are sitting down you would be able to see the child laying down,if the child is an infant sleeping or such, you will not be able to them with out actually getting up to look higher then the pads are situated.

Bumper pads are only recommended until the baby can roll over. I know it sounds crazy, but bumper pads if really a misnomer, they should be called crib decor. They serve no useful function, most peds (including the American Academy of Pediatrics) recommend taking them out once your child can move on his own because they can cause suffocation....
