A peanut is an OILY LEGUME (a "pea") not a true nut (which come from TREES).

A peanut is closer than a pea than a nut, but it is neither. Like peas, peanuts are a legume, a plant that has it's seeds in pods. Some knowledge doesn't neccesarily come from websites, I learned that a long time ago in school. But if you need web proof, it took me 35 seconds to find:

A peanut is a legume, as they grow underground, not on a tree.
Although a nut in the culinary sense, in the botanical sense the fruit of the peanut is a woody, indehiscent legume or pod and not technically a nut(Wikipaedia).

It's a nut that comes in a case similar to peas, except that it grows underground. That's how it was named. It's a nut by culinary standards, but botanically it's actually a pod, and not technically a pea or nut.
