The county benefits from jails, and the state benefits from prisons. This has become big business in some states. Some prisons are owned and operated by private companies also. The federal government pays these establishments for each day a detainee is held, and it is more then the price to house an inmate. Therefor the more prisoners involved, the higher the profits. Is this in the best interest of the public? I believe most first time and small time criminals come out of jail better prepared to take on more aggressive and violent offenses. I feel the federal money should balance the cost of detainees, but reserve the profit margins for trade schools, and medical facilities to teach these people how to better themselves.
PS Some of this money should also go into developing a evaluation system to individually work with each person. Many people had a very rough childhood or upbringing, that lead them to the path there life is on now. It is never to late to change most of these paths. Start with there circle of "friends" and self esteem. Change these and the rest will come naturally.

Society in general benefits from criminals being put in jail. When they are in jail they can not steal from us, therefore, we do not have to buy more goods to replace what they have stolen from us. They can not murder, rape or injure us, therefore reducing the medical and funeral bills we have to pay. Is your child, family member, or significant other worth less than the cost of housing criminals?

In response to 77, I actually handle shipping and receiving, allocating, etc for a company who sells computer and electronic components as well as nuts and bolts to UNICOR federal prison industuries and believe me, they do NOT make twice as much as if we sold to another company, though we do profit. It's our 2nd largest account. Requests for quotes go out, bids are given and the lowest bidder gets the contract.

And to the first responder, the prisoners actually do a lot of the work around the prisons, contractor jobs; they build additions and they build new prisons as well in some cases. But I'm sure the contractors do make some cash off it.

Obviously the people that benefit most from locking up criminals are the poor people that would otherwise have been their victims. Criminals disproportionately impact upon the lives of poor people, they are hit more frequently and they are less able to weather the effects of a robbery or assault. So if we stop, or slow, the incarceration of convicted criminals, poor people will take it on the chin.
