I have a Hp Laptop running Microsoft Professional Service Pack 2, Home edition on my Desktop. I have high speed internet, and want to vpn to my home network over any random internet I can pick up. How do I do this? I have a static Ip address from my ISP and my ip address on my LAN never changes. How do I restrict access to my home network over vpn to only my laptop MAC address?

are you crazy? connecting a wireless router to your work's network?????? First is this your business or a company you work for? 802.1x Wireless typically is NOT secure and if the company catches you doing this they can charge you in a court of law for opening the network's access to the public. This is exactly what I am going to school for NETWORK SECURITY and I've spent about 22 years with computers. you don't understand how "black hats" think or what they can do. you don't understand the problems it can cause and the hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages this can do. 100m is kind of far I think. but yes, your theory would work if it can cover the distance. some say using pringles cans for "directional antennas" help but I've never done it. set a wireless router up in the office, connect it to your computer there. set your laptop up with a wireless card and there you go. you should have a very decent connection. the network might not notice the router, our you might have to do some IP juggling to get it to notice it. then just set the range of ips to 2 and set your ip on the comp and then the ip on your laptop. stay away from WEP routers. Stick with the WPA or WPA2. if you understand that then you might be ready. I believe it should work. Good luck. Check the policies at your job first. don't ask directly, just do some quite investigating and reading.

You need additional software to do this. My recommendation is PCAnywhere. I suppose if I'm going to give you a really thorough answer, I should qualify that by saying that theoretically you *could* *possibly* set up your own VPN system, but it is technically and costly prohibitive. You can get PCAnywhere for about $15-$30 if you shop around. And it's super easy to set up and has built-in security that is generally adequate for personal use.
