Now that the bumps are there... it takes a little bit of time to heal. Use alcohol to dry them out but also use a cream to keep them from itching as much (hydrocorisone) If you are using a razor STOP!!! Use clippers and clean them often. Also don't cut your hair as low all of the time if you can. Also massage your scalp and definately stay away from straight razors or possibly razors you use to shave your face. They also sell a cream called bump be gone to assist in reducing the bumps. If you have hair use a brush to get your hair follicles from curling back into your scalp. Let me know how it works.

I'm not black, but my husband is and he gets shave bumps, hair bumps etc. A lot of it depends on the type of razor he uses. He can't use most electrics, as his hair is too thick. With a razor, a single blade tends to cause less irritation, they make special razors, I think they are called 'bump fighter'. Also, if the razor is too sharp or too dull he has more of a problem. If he combs his beard with a regular hairbrush frequently and especially before he shaves, its not as bad. Also he removes any ingrown hairs before they become infected. And never ever ever dry shave or just shave with water, an unscented anti-bacterial soap or shave gel seems to help him immensely. If this doesn't help, you may want to go see a doctor, because there are some people who are especially hyper-sensitive, and they may have recommendations on a topical ointment that you can use that would help.
Added: if you follow Sweet's link and are considering cortisone injections, keep in mind that one of the possible side effects is that they lighten the skin at site of injection.

as a black man i do suffer from the same thing Maine is still there after many treatments bu he can reduce the ones that happens on his face due to shaving by buying ten skin product and amens at amazon or any drug store. it has reduce my own and it is not the same compare to before. he can also change his shaving blade by buying Gillette (Sp please) triple blade .
the main reason is that blacks do naturally have curly hair and when it cut, most of the do not fall out completely sticking on the skin than re grow on top of the dead skin forming bumps. i hope this helps or you can see your doctoor or cheak webmd.com

I have black male friends who also suffer with this. From what they tell me and what I've read, your best bet is to see a dermatologist. They can prescribe things to help clear it up. There's not much over-the-counter stuff that works. By the way, here's a link on it. It's called Folliculitis keloidalis nuchae.
