I know it seems ignorant but I am a well educated person and its something that intrigues me. If they are born without the ability to communicate how do we tell them what they are, indeed who they are? Surely as they are in a constant 'in your head' state, then do you think they are always thinking - what is going on? Why is someone putting stuff in my mouth? And do they think that we all must be like this?!! It really confuses me!

I would say that the person would accept everything literally - and not ask themselves -How would they know to question what IS or what could be ? Communication is possible, although the question you ask as far as who or what they are I think could be explained through what they are not. They would learn by using their remaining senses, which I've learned are more sensitive to compensate for the absence of another - and possibly create a custom sign language -or- I've seen a sign language of a type where symbols are drawn on someones own hand, and then it's description or definition is related - to teach this they would create the symbol and (show) it's identity also through touch where possible.

Deaf Blind children are taught sign writing by the teacher holding the child's hands over their own, to feel the sign. Then, the child's fingers are formed into a sign, by the teacher. Touching and feeling play a very big part in the child's development. Eventually, the child learns the necessary language and can advance to braille, computer work, and advanced studies, just as a seeing hearing young adult can.
It isn't all work, as centre with sensory toys and equipment, are available for children to experience vibrations , etc.
Helen Keller, (1880 - 1968) an American deaf blind child, was left in ignorance by her family, until a teacher, Annie Sullivan, started working with her when Helen was aged about 7 years. Helen went on to study at college and lived a successful life with only three senses. Check her out on the web. There is a film about her story. It was made about 30 or 40 years ago and I believe it was called The Miracle Worker. Anne Bancroft starred as the teacher.
If you live in the UK, you may have noticed a Charity called Sense. They raise funds for Deaf Blind people. They have leaflets for our information.
Deaf and blind people are very often afflicted this way because of Rubella damage, so please girls, have the Rubella vaccine when offered to you around your 13th or 14th Birthdays. It will protect your future unborn babies.

Hi. Birds have a sensitivity to magnetism. A small organ in their head uses this sensitivity to determine where they are and where they are headed. Humans do not have this ability. An intelligent bird might ask "How do humans even know where they are on the planet? How do they know how to get out of the cold areas? Do they even know the 'direction force' upon we depend even exists?" And this would be from a bird brain! Our existence in this world is only what our senses tell us. Blind people and deaf people get along just fine.

other senses are heightened to make up for the senses that they lose .. so knowing that these people are able to communicate to other people non verbally i can only assume that they know who they are thro being who they are ! ....u are u thro what u have learnt and been taught and so its the same for other people ... speech isn't the only for of communication .... its like asking does a blind person dream !?! yes of course they do its just different i suppose just like we all form a personality and a sense of belief in who we are !!if i lost the ability to speak and became deaf all of a sudden it wouldn't change who i was or what i was !! not too good at explaining but i know what i mean lol .....
