I'm scared that someone who writes like you is going to be tutoring someone else.

Teaching is all about forming relationships. Find out what your student is interested in and then use that as a lens to explore the curriculum and reach the learning objectives. Come to every lesson prepared with materials and activities. Assume the student hasn't done the reading and the homework, so that you're ready just in case you need to review / re-do that work. Identify the student's strengths (consider reading about Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences) and use your student's strengths to facilitate learning.

Uh, why are you tutoring if you don't know what you are doing? I'm a teacher with two degrees and I tutor. I think the child is in trouble here....

I would give 'em treats when he does a good job...and make sure you introduce yourself in a fun activity way....He/she will be happy..and most likely like you.
