I'm thinking about starting my own writers site. And wanted to know when a person comes into my website would I be able to know who they are such as name, address, etc. Or just that a someone visited my website? I know dumb question but just curious

You could get: IP, ISP, cookie referrer (what site they came from), OS, script enable disabled, browser version, screen resolution – by using this free service and adding script to HTML of your website:

Well it depends on what company you host with. Some offer log analyzers that tell you how many times someone has visited and where they were referred from, what links they used! You wont know there name.

with a normal ticker, all you'd know is that your page had a hit.
