If Europe had not colonized Africa, maybe it would have a fighting chance. Neither of the two options you asked are appropriate, because it's not a matter of the individual, it's a matter of the system.

Perpetual ignorance? That's just a fluff word that doesn't mean anything. Lack of self-control? Same deal. I normally try to be polite, but your two options are nothing but ridiculous assertions that the problems can be solved by educating the masses.

Not so. The African governments are corrupt, full of greed and violence with no eye for the political arena, they are overwhelmed with local violence and genocide. They require UN peacekeeping forces and foreign intervention of the military vein if anything is going to be changed.

Poverty and starvation are symptoms. the problem is the tribal feuds that have existed since pre-history.

These feuds are being supported and fueled by European countries with vested interests in stripping the natural resources of the countries. The French Foreign Legion is helping to foment strife in several of these countries.

Oil in Nigeria, cocoa and col-tan in Congo... these are just examples of the natural resources being bought by European consortiums for a mere fraction of their real value. All the while encouraging the tribal/civil wars that keep the countries from realizing the wealth of their resources and instead selling them for virtual peanuts in order to secure arms.

Food, medicine, agricultural supplies, and money are hijacked as they arrive in the countries and used by the ruling junta who uses starvation as a means of eliminating the opposing tribes. It is warfare by attrition. This genocide started since Europe abandoned their African colonies and continues to this day.

No on both accounts.

Africa suffers from corrupt leaders who try to promote themselves above the masses and think they are separate from the people they are supposed to serve. The corruption runs so deep that the only way to survive in African style politics is to be corrupt yourself.

Power corrupts...absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Some of these "backward" countries need to be taught and helped for survival. That's one reason we have alot of groups; including missionaries, to show these people the key to survival. Alot know nothing about irrigation techniques, farming, diseases. It is our job to try to help anyone in need. It's a crime for anyone to go hungry like that; especially when you live in a country as rich as ours. We could feed people like that if we just saved just ONE DAY of all the food we throw away and waste here.

Africa has numerous problems, lack of effective leadership, lack of ability to establish stable governments, Greedy men taking postions of responsibilty, and creating chaos. It is an interesting continent and I have gotton lost in its history and problems. because of the very foreign sounding names.
