An excellent question. I just hope my answer isn't too long!
My only source is logic and observation. Conservatives support the EC, while liberals would like to flush it as a historical anachorism. The 2000 presidential election is the case in point. Although Gore received about 500,000 more total votes, the EC delivered the presidency to Bush. The EC gives more power to the unpopulated states and unpopulated states are much more conservative. Each state gets the number of congressman it has in Congress as its number of votes. But every state has two senators no matter how big or small. This is what gives the unpopulated states a major advantage over the highly populated states.
If the Democrats were smarter or more organized or more financially well off, they would make dumping the EC their first order of business!

Mostly conservatives. The electoral college was put in place as an acknowledgment that the masses are generally stupid and don't know what is really going on. It requires the actual presidential determination be selected by these individuals and not the simple majority vote of the populous.
You can do some research to see which founding fathers supported this initiative for the constitution.

I think generally, Conservatives like it more, because most Liberals prefer the Popular vote, as all of European countries only use the popular vote.
Liberals generally look toward Europe for inspiration or good ideas, whereas Conservatives generally don't like to look beyond American borders

Liberals hate it, because if there was a popular vote instead, Gore would've been elected in 2000 instead of Bush.
