I use Murphy's Soap, a bottle at the dollar general is just a dollar! Smells good too!

If its not shiny it sounds like bare wood, do not use detergents on that, clean with warm soapy water and then seal it with a stain sealer after lightly sanding it to bring out the color and maintain the finish, good luck

Just sand it lightly and rub on some paste wax,it will protect the wood and keep the rustic look.
