I tried to ask this question in the mythology section but didn't get any true answers. So I thought some of you readers might be able to help me.

I'm a writer who just got the idea for a story with fairies in it. I'm just beginning my research and wondered if anyone knew if there was a name for male fairies. Any good books or websites would be a help as well. There seems to be a lot of nonesense out there to go through and just want a little help. I'm cluelesss about fairies. I've always been more of a werewolf kind of girl so anything you can tell me would appreciated. Thanks.

the "fairy" used commonly in modern fiction was made up during victorian times. before that fairies came in several different forms and were considered spirits of various natural phenomenon. they were immortal, so they didnt necesarily have to breed to keep their species going. diferent types took either male or female form depending on whether the storyteller thought a particular natural feature was male or female. there were some fairies(elves, fomoran) that had both male and female of the species. since youre making up the story you have a lot of room to make stuff up as you see fit.

I believe that fairies applies to both males and females.

Good luck with your book, although, I believe you'll have a hard time finding a publisher. Publishing companies are seeing too much of magic and fairies and unicorns, and even werewolves. Better make it exceptional.

Like everyone else, I think it is still fairies.

But that doesn't mean that you can't come up with your own term. It is your book after all.

Maybe you'll coin a term that writers will be using for centuries!

Good luck!

aren't they the ELVES? the elves were always males in fairy stories and i love fairy stories...sprites are female....sometimes people consider male fairies as angels too...

fairy stories can be mostly seen in children books such as in cinderella...a good (but also sexual book) about fairies is called "once" by James Herbert...

I've read of Fairies being called "Fey", so you could call them "Fey" or "Fey folk" and then use Fairies as a word that non-"Fey" call them.
