Three geniuses stand in a file (one behind the other). Each can see only to the front, so the rear person can see the middle and the front, the middle person can see the front, and the genius in the front cannot see anyone. You have five hats. Two are white, and three are red. You blindfold the three geniuses, who are utterly truthful, and out a hat--at random--on the head of each. Then you hide the other two hats and remove the blindfolds. You then ask each genius to name the color of his hat (which he cannot see). The rear one says "I don't know." The middle on says, "I don't know." Then the front one says, "I know."

WHAT COLOR IS THE FRONT GENIUS' HAT??????

If the front two had white hats, there would only be red hats left, so the rear genius would know. He doesn't, so there is at least one red hat among the front two.

Now, the middle genius knows all this, so if the front genius had on a white hat, he, the middle, would know that his is red. He knows no such thing, so the front genius must have a red hat on.

All this (or something similar) was going through the front genius' mind as he heard the two replies, so that's how he knew.

If the first and second genius were both wearing white hats, then the third would know his was red, therefore, at least one of the first two are wearing a red hat. If the first is wearing a white hat, then the second would know his hat is red, so the first genius' hat would have to be red.

The color of the genius' hat is for me to know and you to guess.

Realizing that you/I happens to be the person who has placed the hats at random on the head of the 3 geniuses, it doesn't matter that the first one says they know the color of the hat, you/I should know the color.

The third one knows if he sees two white hats, he must be wearing red, but he says he doesn't know, so the hats he can see are either one red and one white, or both red.

The second man is aware of the third man's logic, and knows he himself could be wearing either a red or a white hat. If the second man sees a white hat on the first man, he would know he himself would have to be wearing the red hat. He sees a red hat, and therefore can't be sure.

Therefore, the first man realizes that he must be wearing a red hat.

Is that right?

first guy is wearing red hat.
1. If the first and second genius had two white hat, then the third would know his had red.
2.If the first and second genius had alternate color(white & red) hats, then the third would know he had white hat as we had 2 white hats only.
3.So both first and second guys had red hat only.
