Is it really an "hour" glass?

it depends on the type of hourglass that you have. they are built to take up a certain amount of time. i think one hour may be the norm, but you can get 'em bigger, or (in the case of an egg timer) smaller. there are many possible answers to this one.

"Hour glass" is symbolism for all size hour glasses so it would depend on the size of the hour glass and the amount of the sand. The little hour glasses that are used to play games with are usually just minutes. There are ones that are build for an hour, but not all of them are.

That's a little bit like "how long is a piece of string".

You can purchase hour glasses to measure any period of time that you need... regardless of the fact that it's called an "hour"glass.
