People seem to think that space research involves chucking billions of dollars into black holes. That money is spent right here on Earth, people - for every dollar that NASA recieves from the gov't, 7 dollars are spent in the economy as a result. NASA hires people to do their research AND clean their buildings, they buy equipment and parts and labor from US-based companies. Why does it cost so much to send up a shuttle? They are paying labor, fuel, parts, rent, etc - it all comes back around.

I believe that money spent on space research is needed and like most projects it may not be managed correctly...I'm sure we could all come up with something about space that we would like to be researched.
As with all the world poverty this is different..everybody is looking at each other and asking for donations from large corporations etc...great..but in my opinion and everybody will probably cut me down...
Why not get the worlds 10-20 most richest people to give a few million dollars, pounds etc...Bill Gates wouldn't miss $10Million this would be a big help to most third world countries (providing that the right people get it and it don't get taken by those idiots at the top)

Yes, but there are claims that every money spent/invested on space research did bring us significant benefit with new technologies for masses. NASA should have more detail discussion about that.

For a website: do a search for "NASA spinoffs".
In your report, also be sure to mention that most of the money spent on space research is put right into our economy - it pays the salaries of thousands of people (everyone from scientists to engineers to machinists to secretaries to janitors).
For an opinionated discussion, see this blog: http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2006/10/18/katie-couric-is-a-bonehead/
I happen to agree with it completely, he raises many great points.
