Pre-main sequence stars (T Tauri stars, for example) are fueled by hydrogen fusion like main sequence stars, but they produce additional energy due to gravitational contraction. The young age of these stars is confirmed by the abundance of lithium, an element that is rapidly destroyed in stars.
