I was just wondering after hearing how much a friends baby weighed at birth, 8.5 lbs, is there a certain weight or weight range that doctors want babies to weigh at birth? I think I was 5 lbs 10 oz. at birth, and I was the smallest of my siblings. But my cousins have all been in the 7lb or 8lb range. So, is there an ideal range that doctors hope babies fall within or is it all dependent on the baby? I don't think I'm wording this very well, but I can't think of any other way to put it. Oh, also, is the babies weight at birth soley the result of what you ate during pregnancy or are their multiple factors that account for how much a baby weighs? Thanks. :)

it used to be that if the baby was 4 or 5 lbs and under they would have to stay at the hosptial to make sure there little bodies would be able handle the outside world and not get sick. I had kids that would ranged from 5 and 13 oz to 7 lbs and 12 oz. I do think that if you smoke you may have a smaller baby. And if you gestantial diabetes Your babies tend to be larger. But everyone is different. You may have a sibling who had kids that were large 9 to 10 lbs. and then you may have them to be around 7 or 8.

My kids were both pretty normal size. My daughter wasn't very long and still isn't very tall. My daughter was 7.2 and 18 1/4 in. My son was 8 even and 21 1/2 inches. But, smaller and larger babies are pretty normal also. As long as they aren't like 4 pounds. The size of the baby can depend on the health of the mother, the size of the mother, the health of the baby, and genetics. If a mom has gestational diabetes, sometimes the babies are large. But, in a normal healthy pregnancy, the babies are usually a healthy size!

I am the youngest of 4 and we all weighed between 7.5 and 8.5 lbs. All babies are different. Usually anything between 6-9 pounds is normal.

I was around 6lbs so was my son. The average these days is 7.5lbs. I know someone who had a 12lb baby. Your diet contributes to the weight of the baby. Having a Gestational Diabetes also will result in a large baby.
