A steady check engine light generally means that your vehicle has an emissions related problem. Could be a something like a vacuum leak, a valve that is not working or you left your fuel cap off while running the engine. While these should be checked out, they are not as severe as a flashing light.
A flashing check engine light means you have a serious cylinder misfire. I would recommend getting it checked out so as to avoid a more costly repair.
As far as going to Autozone or Advance, this is ok but they usually are way off on the diagnosis. They just want to tell you something so they can sell you a part. They can read the code, but they can't read what the engine is reading to give you a reliable diagnosis. I have had many people say they had a bad catalytic converter cuzz AZ said so. Upon an accurate inspection, they needed an O2 sensor.

A steady check engine light means a Malfunction has been found in the OBD of the vehicles computer. This is usually a sensor giving an abnormal reading (e.g. low voltage, non-stoichiometric air/fuel mixture or a loss of vacuum). The blinking CEL is always a catastrophic failure in the engine's emission system. Get the vehicle to a shop ASAP or repairs will get more expensive.

A blinking check engine light means you have some major problems, stop the car and get it towed to your mechanic and get it scanned, If it was just on solid it would be little to worry about. A solid light means it is emissions related, loose gas cap or a faulty sensor.

I would not go so fsr as calling a tow truck but it does mean you need to get your vehicle checked as soon as possible. I would look at my dash gauges and see if any are reading abnormal.
Oil pressure and alternator in particular. If you have a major auto supply near they will read your trouble codes and tell you the problem. BEWARE this is a large opportunity to get ripped off.

Take it to Auto Zone or Advance auto parts, and get them to hook up their OBDII scanner on it. It's free. Then they can translate the code and sell you the part.
It could also mean that you've reached a service interval that the cars computer makes that light flash to warn you of up and coming maintenance

It means get it to a shop. It could be a goofed up light but it could also be something seriously wrong with your car. You could get stuck somewhere. Check your oil also.
