Hi
An online friend has a prob with audio(no sound since he reinstalled windows xp) I think it is a driver prob but he does not know how to find out what motherboard he has or what sound card or onboard sound he has, I have sent him to device manager which also points out he has a prob with his video, I suggested belarc advisor but that does not recognise that he even has a audio /video card installed ......... any help would be appreciated ,remembering that he does not know how to find out what mobo he has either?
It was bought from a television selling channel and came without any backup discs etc ...except for xp disc

You will first need to find out if he has onboard audio and video. You can tell this by looking at the back of the tower, if its onboard, the video and audio connectors will not be in a card slot. If they are both in a card slot, you will have to remove them and hope and pray there is some manufacture info on them, if the system has onboard video or audio, you will need to get the mobo number. In either case, it is then a matter of going to the manufacturers sites and downloading the drivers.
P.S. To all of you who insist on telling people to reinstall windows! These are some of the common problems that pop up! Anyone who suggests this to resolve a problem needs their head kicked up their bunghole! A reinstall is the absolute last thing to ever do!
Endlove, shut up! You dont know enough to fix a sandwich!

Another programme that may help your friend identify his motherboard, sound card and video card is EVEREST Home Edition. This is free, and can be downloaded from: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/Everest-Home-Edition.shtml

The chances are your friend has onboard sound and graphics.

Are you sure your friend didn't receive driver disks with his computer. If he's certain of that, he should get back onto the TV selling channel and ask for them. If the disk he received is an XP restore disk, it will have the necessary drivers on there. Be aware, however, that if he uses that, he will lose any information (data) that he's saved on his hard drive as it will format his drive and then reinstall things as though it were new.

Have him go to Start, Run, type in DXDIAG. This will bring up a tabbed box that tell him everything he needs to know about his audio and video hardware. Good Luck.
