I had a friend who did the same thing. It's really a judgement call- I think it's best to make sure his whole family is aware how seriously depressed he is. In addition try to get him to understand that the even though it may feel better to release the pain physically by cutting, this is only a temporary feeling that cannot really help the issue at hand. His mind is what needs to heal, and emotional therapy via exercise or prescribed chemical means can usually help more than you might think.

I think when your friend told you it was a cry for help, or he wouldn't have even showed you. This is scary and upsetting, but when someone is doing something to hurt themselves or others, you have to do the right thing and reach out for help. I wouldn't tell any other kids, but I would seriously consider telling the guidance counselor and let the adults handle it from there. Don't worry about him being mad at you, because it'll all turn out for the best in the end when he gets the help he needs. Good luck to you.

tell the guidance counselor I know he said not to tell for they will call the parents they have to for by law he is harming himself and soon he will lose all blood and die from this and you don;t need this on your conscience at first he will yell at you for betraying him I had a friend in HS who did this and she was furious at me but afterwards she thanked me for having the courage to tell on her for she really did need help so go and get help for him don't let him know that you told the counselor and tell the counselor the same thing too they can always say that a teacher saw him show you his arm or they got a glance of it themselves and a teacher told on him not you that way your friendship is saved good luck to you both !!

There is a toll-free number you can call--1-800-DONT-CUT. You could ask them how to help your friend. In the meantime, since he has trusted you by showing you that he does this, ask him to call you whenever he gets the urge to cut, and to tell you what's going on. Maybe talking to you will keep him from cutting. I hope so.

You're not going to like this, but I wouldn't do anything, except dump the problem on someone else.
