I've had this happen on older cars several times too. (Especially on windows that get very little use, or... a lot of use)
Your "up switch" section may have poor/worn/contaminated contacts and can often be cleaned with few shots of WD-40. Just remove the switch assy., shoot it and allow the switch to set and clean out the contamination. Then, re-install the switch and actuate it a few times. This is not always effective, but it has never failed when I have done this.
Also, you can just keep working the up switch a while. Sometimes, with patience and persistance, it will eventually make the connection and the window will go back up.
Both techniques are good for rarely used switches. If the car is very old and the switch is just plain worn out, best to just pull the switch set and replace the switch modules as needed.
FYI: If the motor is working in the down position well, you may just have a bad connection at the "UP" wire connection in the motor harness. This is a lot more work and best left to a Professional.
This job is not hard, but we need the proper tools and a volt/ohm meter comes in handy too. When the switch is removed from the car, we can test for "continuity" between the grounding terminal and up/down switch positions. If you get very low ohmic readings on the switch, it's good. Your problem lies either with the motor or wiring to/from motor and switch.
If you get one low and one very high or no reading at all, that segment of the switch is suspect and needs deep cleaning or replacement.
If the window has mechanical binding, out of the track or something is wrong with the window track itself, this requires some careful inspection. The track may be damaged, out of alignment or have a lot of gunk built up on the track.
Here, a few heavy shots of WD-40 may help. However, this cleaner/lube has an awful smell to it and it can linger for days if we use a lot of it.

Do you still hear the motor for the window working?
If not check your fuses for the power windows. Try the other window as well...if none of them work...its more likely the fuses.
If its only one, check the window switch connector.
If you do hear the motor...the window could have come off the track. That will require taking the interior door paneling off to be reset.

If you have auto knowledge you can remove the door panel and put the window up manually. If you know nothing about what I just mentioned, take your car to a repair shop. Your power window motor is broken and a new one needs to be installed.

I had same situation. thought I was in for money spending... taking off the door etc..... I sprayed a lot of WD 40 between the window and door--from front to back.. started to come out of the bottom of door for a mess, but wiped away.. tried it again.. two or three tries and window came up.. no further trouble.. or could be off track .. or motor going.. try the WD 40..

I could be a couple of things, it could be the switch, window regulator or the window has just come off the track. In any case the door panel needs to be removed.

If you can hear the motor running while you attempt to put your window back up, you need a new regulator. If not, you either need a new window switch, or window motor.

You will need a visual. If you hear something, the switch is good and possibly the regulator as well. The window may just be getting jammed in the tracks. No matter what, these things are a nuisance.

It dropped below the window "stop" and came off the track.
You will need to remove the door pannel.
It's fairly easy, but time consuming.

there are bumpers inside your door that the window bumps against.the window is probably sticking.you might check the track and also grease the track.

Yeah, what Nate said. Also, could be the plastic gears that they use on the motor and arm.
