Lyrics 1st...I think..lol

I think it can be both. If a musician is playing around with his guitar and finds a sound, he really likes, he might be inspired to write lyrics for it, and vice verse

sorry i don't believe in what the your first answer was....music is not poetry! do you call some of the greatest rock "poetry"....no... as a musician myself i work out the guitar first then i go to the other guys in the band and ask em what they think.... they say what they think we play it and then we add the lyrics that we think goes with the emotion and feel of it

I can't say for anyone else, but usually I write the lyrics first. Music is poetry, after all.

they do lyrics first then match a beat to it

they have people that do that for them
