How much are you willing to spend, the memory size, how long it'll go without needing a charge are a few things to know. For the price of an 8 GB Nano you can get a 30 GB iPod Video ($250).

If you are looking at the ipod the big thing is size based on how much you want to put on it.
I had a 40gb and had almost 6000 songs. I had it for 3 yrs with minimal problems before upgrading to the video ipod. I do recommend buying it at Best Buy with their extend warranty. In the 3 yrs I had mine I did take it in three times - twice requiring repairs and in less than 10 days I had it back fixed for no extra charge.

Take my advice, do not get an iPod. These products are the crappiest on the market. My mom's shuffle died six months after she got it for Christmas and Apple refused to service it for free even though it was under a one year warranty. My Nano died a month after I got it and thankfully, I got it at Best Buy with a 2 yr warranty.
Get a Creative Zen, a Sony MP3 player, Sansa SanDisk, or wait for the Microsoft Zune....ANYTHING but an Apple iPod.

you need to know the only reason you want one is because, you want a portable music player..and the ipod is the mainstream thing, so you want an ipod. it's popularity is a result of aggressive marketing...not because it's a quality product. yes, it's nice, but, there are better mp3 players on the market i'm sure....since i'm not a fan of mp3, i don't know what's out there now.

You need to know that they're overrated. Get a Creative Zen Vision: M instead. Many more features and better picture quality.

really just what size you want...the more songs you want to be able to put on it, the more expensive it will be.
