There will ALWAYS be another one right around the corner. There's no point waiting to get the "newest" one, because a new version will inevitably be announced the second you have it in your hand. Just get one and enjoy it, and upgrade once it no longer meets your needs. You will always have to upgrade eventually.
Anyway, the first few people to buy any new version are the ones who get to discover and work out all the bugs.

Yeah, go for the 80 GB for Christmas. You probably already know this, but it's the same size as the 60 GB, has a brighter screen and longer battery life than the older ones, etc. It's really nice. I'm guessing it'll be fall '07 before any newer/improved ones come out.
You might be able to get one a little _cheaper_ if you wait until early/spring '07, though. Or maybe they'll offer a special edition/weird color version for $20 more.

Well, shop around a bit because iPods are quite shoddy. My mom's Shuffle died after six months and Apple, for some reason, refused to service it for free under the one year warranty. My Nano died a month after I got it and thankfully, I got it from Best Buy which gave me a 2 yr. warranty for it.
I would suggest a Creative Zen or wait until the Microsoft Zune comes out.
