Couch in English. Divan in French.
There was a really nice movie called "A Couch in Paris" (Un divan à Paris) about a psychiatrist/psychoanalyst.

It is a couch, more formally known as a chaise lounge. They were not invented by of for the psychiatric industry. Ancient Romans used these kinds of benches in which to lie down and eat. It was considered bad for digestion, at the time, to sit up and partake of food.

I believe you are thinking about the couches that Freudians used to use... at least in cartoons. I don't think couches are used anymore.
