nope nope nope... this is a common problem with rx7's.
I have an 87, and mine does the same thing.
Usually, its your pulsation dampener, it should be replaced.

It doesn't hurt anything if you leave it alone, its just funes.
So you could do as I did... not even bother it! lol!
I would replace mine, but pulsation dampeners dont run cheap. And I can live with smelling a little gas every now and then.

It could be a leak anywhere from the gas tank to the fuel injectors. Unless you know a lot about your car, take it to a mechanic to have it looked at. If it's leaking, it's going to be cutting down on your gas milage, so paying to fix it will actually payoff. And it's not safe driving around with a gas leak.

check the fuel injectors. to do this run your hand along the back side of the motor. if you feel a spray or mist coming from the motor than you have 1 or maybe even 2 bad injectors. If it is 1 or 2 injectors than it will cost 2 to 4 hundred dollars to fix. but it needs to get fixed. the leaking gas not only inhibits mileage, it also can catch your car on fire.

my boyfriend has a 90' mazda rx-7 he had the same problem and it ended up being the gasket around the fuel tank thats located on the inside of the vehicle..cause when ever we would ride in the car if you rolled down the windows you would not smell it anymore.

it's usually a fuel line leak. Get them checked and look for pooling under the car.
