It is possible. However, if you do not know BMW's, you would be wise to have it inspected by a shop that does. BMW parts/labor are sometimes quite high and if this car is needing or will shortly need maintenance or replacements you could be in for a rude shock and wipe out any perceived initial savings you think you are getting. An example, 740's have expensive catalytic converters (2) that are know wear out and require replacements. Dealer quotes can be $2000 or more. Any records with the car? could let you know if some things have occurred. Tranny is the "sealed" type w/o a dipstick, I believe, and the condition /fluid is hard to determine for for the casual observer. Fluid is extremely expensive. Self leveling shock and accumulators are wear-ables and are quite expensive also. Are pixels missing on the dash, because they usually keep disappearing and the solution is not cheap? Lots of electronics on this vehicle...you get the picture I am sure. Many folks need some time to understand these cars, so investing is getting help initially could save you from buyers remorse later. A low price like this should make you concerned, and if you are not prepared for higher maintenace costs that a higher mileage vehicle presents, keep looking.

It's a loaded question, but for a car that's 15 years old and 130k on it, it's considered low mileage. BUt this doesn't mean it won't break down on you. The E36 3 series are generally really good cars, but like any other well-made cars, they need to be properly maintained to keep running nicely. The 2.5 L engine will last 250k easily if someone stays on top of maintainence. The best way to make sure is to ask for records. If the owner has kept all the receipts, then that shows they're anal and meticulous about keeping up the car, which is great. If they can't produce any receipts or if the car has more than 2 owners, I would walk away from it. ALWAYS take the car and get it checked out by a shop that knows BMWs. BMWs are not your run-of-the-mill cars. Certain things on their cars require special diagnostic tools to do repairs and adjustments on them. Never skimp on this process.

The Kelley's Blue Book suggestions are on the money, but unless this thing has a serious problem 6500 is actually a great deal on that car. This actually makes it more important that you thoroughly research this car before laying out any cash. Good luck.

Probably- check the front tires-brakes and cooling system. I think they put a plastic radiator in those, and they need to be replaced at some point. Not sure about a timing belt/chain? It`s a big heavy car, you will go through front tires, struts and brakes quickly, and it`s expensive to service. Good car though, just save your pennies for the inevitable repair bills.

go to kbb.com and find the link to private owner, try to get info on what options the car has and input that into the site, they will tell you how much the owner should be asking.
